The Blind Buzz on Cycling

Thanks to Paul West at British cycling sending on this press release

Amputee Pedal Power

On the 30th September 2011, a team of 15 amputees and supporters will embark on an epic journey to cycle 300 kilometres in just 3-days. Our team consisting of above and below knee amputees will cycle from the historic city of London to the romantic city of Paris. To cycle this distance in just three-days is a challenge for any cyclist, but for a team of amputee cyclists this will be an incredible test of stamina, endurance, pain control and mental toughness.

Leg amputees tire more quickly than their peers. An amputee who walks the same distance as a non-amputee will have a higher level of oxygen consumption, 9% to 20% for below-knee amputees, 45% to 70% for above-knee amputees and up to 300% for bilateral above-knee amputees. This increased oxygen consumption is the reason amputees seem to get out of breath much more quickly – they need more energy to do tasks, and, therefore, need more oxygen.

The challenge starts now, not only do our team need to train hard to prepare for this event, but they have each committed to raise a staggering £1,250 towards the work of three amputee charities; LimbPower, The Douglas Bader Foundation and the Limbless Association.

Kiera Roche, cyclist and chairman of LimbPower said: “We encourage amputees who have benefited from our work to give something back by joining us for a sporting challenge to raise funds for the next generation of amputees”.
The London to Paris bike ride is over a long-weekend, starting in the streets of south London and cycling through undulating countryside towards the south coast, heading to the port of Dover where the team board the ferry to Calais. The next day the team cycle from Dieppe through sleepy Normandy villages to Gournay en Bray with some challenging hills to conquer. As we approach Paris on day three the surroundings become more urban. We will reach the city centre via its most famous park, the Bois de Boulonge, finishing at the Eiffel Tower.

Why not join us for this amazing adventure and help us raise vital funds for three amazing charities. Call now for more information on 07502276858 or visit

.

LimbPower offer relief to the physically disabled by aiding rehabilitation and improving the quality of life through the medium of recreational and competitive sports and arts.
Charity Registration No: 1132829

Charity Registration No: 800435

Charity Registration No: 803533

The funds raised from this event will be shared equally between the three charities after the administration and tour costs

The Blind Buzz: Attention all interested in Paracycling

I’m pleased to pass on this information, recieved today from Paul West at British Cycling. Please get in touch with him if you want to get involved in these events. His contact information is at the end of this blog entry.

For more cycling information for blind people, please keep an eye on this blog, and visit
Vince’s Parallax: Tandem Cycling and Blind People

Vince Thacker.

Hi all

Hope you are all ok and still managing to get some biking in despite the current weather conditions.

In order to bring you up to speed (and hopefully help keep you motivated through the dark winter months) I attach the paracycling programme as it currently stands for 2011.

As the events start to appear on the horizon I hope to keep you all up to date with closing dates, entry details etc.

Also, sometime early in the new year I hope to try to arrange a get together weekend probably either here in Manchester or down in Newport. This will probably consist of a session or two on the track (No experience necessary and including indoor exercises for handcyclists) and a road ride or two in the local countryside. In order to get an idea of possible numbers, it would be helpful to receive an advice as to who might be interested in being part of such a weekend away. It is envisaged that whilst accommodation would be down to the individual to finance that the fee for attendance itself would probably be around the £25 mark, if not a lot less, depend on anticipated numbers

Any worries do come back to me.

All the best and kindest regards

Paul West
